My First Reading Memory

‘Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.’

Frederick Douglass

It is true that once you learn how to read, that it will make you free. I was so happy when I came across this quote because it is something that I would also say. Once you start reading, you start discovering new types of the world and you like it so much that you don’t want to come back to reality.

I belong to one of those nerds who have discovered the joy of reading at the early stage of life. When I was a kid, I would ‘steal’ gradfather’s newspapers even though I couldn’t read back then. I wanted to know what was so interesting on that pages because my grandfather was constantly reading them.

I remember staring at those pages for hours. They were pretty… I was very young when I learned how to read. I was super excited when I started my elementary school because I could finally read something. My first book that I had to read for school was Grimms’ Fairy Tales. It was one beautiful edition that contained wonderful illustrations. I liked it very much.

And just then my teacher gave me one big, important task. I had to read it and I had to write my opinion on that book. I was so excited but at the same time also scared. I didn’t know what to write. I came back home and I know I started to cry because I was afraid that my teacher wouldn’t like my opinion. I asked my Mother for help because I didn’t know how to form my opinion into one coherent article. We had so much fun!

‘The whole world opened up to me when I learned to read’

Mary McCleod Bethune

I liked all Fairy Tales, but my favourite was Cinderella. I was so obsessed with that story that I wanted to read it every day. I was fascinated by magic and I couldn’t explain why. I just knew I loved every word and I loved Cinderella as a character. I drew Cinderella in my notebooks and even painted her. I felt so proud!

‘Well, there’s one thing: they can’t order me to stop dreaming.’

Cinderella is very speacial to me for so many reason. I love her and, even now, if I could get back to read my very first book/story, I would choose Grimms’ Cinderella again.
