Book Review | A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens

SYNOPSIS
‘If I had my way, every idiot who goes around with Merry Christmas on his lips, would be boiled with his own pudding, and buried with a stake of holly through his heart. Merry Christmas? Bah humbug!’

Introduction and afterword by Joe Wheeler
To bitter, miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, Christmas is just another day. But all that changes when the ghost of his long-dead business partner appears, warning Scrooge to change his ways before it is too late.

Part of the Focus on the Family Great Stories collection, this edition features an in-depth introduction and discussion questions by Joe Wheeler to provide greater understanding for today’s reader. A Christmas Carol captures the heart of the holidays like no other novel.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
undefined Charles John Huffam Dickens was a writer and social critic who created some of the world’s best-known fictional characters and is regarded as the greatest novelist of the Victorian era. His works enjoyed unprecedented popularity during his lifetime, and by the twentieth century critics and scholars had recognised him as a literary genius. His novels and short stories enjoy lasting popularity.

MY THOUGHTS
To start with the fact that I loved all Dicken’s novels that I have read, it isn’t surprising that I enjoyed reading this one too. A Christmas Carol is a holiday read and I am so happy to choose this time of the year to read it. I was familiar with the story of Ebenezer Scrooge and the whole concept of the story. Actually, I had this book in my hands couple of times, but somehow I always found myself reading something else. However, I think that the message in the book is very clear and it will never get old. There are times when all of us become Ebenezer Scrooge. Sometimes we get lost in all material things that life has to offer. We are crazy about money and Christmas is all about ridiculous sales everywhere and yes, sometimes we give in. We forget what Christmas is truly about. Charles Dickens with his characters is there to remind us that it is important to keep the christmas spirit all the time. Be nice to each other. Love each other. Forgive! Do not let the bad times destroy your kindness.
Also, I think everyone is familiar with the story and there is no need for summary. What is the most important here is the message that the book hides. I think everybody should read this book at least once in their life because it will open their eyes. A Christmas Carol will put you in your right place. Being that type of reader who has never seen any A Christmas Carol adaptation in their lives, I, for sure, will see one of them very soon.

I will honour Christmas in my heart, and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The Spirits of all Three shall strive within me. I will not shout out the lessons that they teach. Oh, tell me I may sponge away the writing on this stone!

A Christmas Tale, Charles Dickens

Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and I will always cheerish the christmas spirit in books because it is something very important for me. However, this book is not my favorite Charles Dickens book, but I think that everyone should read this book at least once in their lives.

Love Looks Pretty on You by Lang Leav | Highlights

A Love Letter to Bali

I will never forget those slow, languid days, warm and balmy. The sun was a pomegranate red, ripe, and full of promise, painting the pink sky. We stayed in a Grecian-style villa, overlooking the shoreline, watching the waves crash onto the lazy stretch of sand below.
The daylight sunk into starlight like a slow transition, as we lost track of time altogether. My skin grew luminous and shone from the inside, glowed like a lantern. White crescent moons appeared at the bottom of my fingernails. My hair grew thicker, wilder. We were feasting on exotic fruits and midnight conversations that drifted into the sea salt breeze.
We slept. We woke up in the half-light to watch the sun come up. We didn’t write a single word.
Mischievous monkeys scampered across our balcony. Frogs hopped in our path and out of sight again, the sound of their croaking ever-present. Tiny birds darted in and out of our line of vision like thoughts.
The half-moon yawned when we waved goodbye to another moment, lost to memory. The walls learned our secrets like how you like your coffee black and I like mine with cream and sugar. We left something of ourselves behind.
He feels like the culmination of every good deed I’ve ever done.

From: Love Looks Pretty on You by Lang Leav

As you can see, this is another post about the last book I read called Love Looks Pretty on You. I like the author’s word choice and the emotions that the author gave us are wonderful. There is some soft vibe in the book that makes you feel emotional and I think only a few authors can achieve it. Lang Leav was successful in her language to show us all these emotions. To describe how you feel is quite complex task to do because there is always this variety of emotions. Everyone fights their own battle and there are always the good and the bad feelings inside of us. Happiness versus sorrow. Peace versus anger. It’s up to you to decide how you feel and how your life is going to look like. You just have to understand your feelings.

Also, the author’s descriptions are marvelous. They are the upper level of the language and it’s something that will always attract me. As you can see, Lang Leav did an amazing job at this point and I want to read such descriptions all the time. The book Love Looks Pretty on You is full of these amazing descriptions and I highly recommend you to read it. Do check it out!

In my previous I left you the Amazon link, so you can order it if you want.

MY THOUGHTS
Love Looks Pretty on You is the first Lang Leav’s novel that I have read and I must say that I am not disappointed. I really enjoyed reading this book and it is surprising that the mentioned topics could be represented this good way. The book tells a story of a woman fighting against her feelings. At some point, she is loved and she feels pretty. She can freely say that she is happy. That kind of happy that makes her rethink her emotional state. Is she really completely happy? Her heart says she is. Her brain says she’s not, but she could be.
Well, what makes her think think that way?
There are two things that ruins her eternal happiness. The first thing is her past. While I was reading this book I got the feeling that the girl loved in her past, but it was not that kind of love that will make you happy and all satisfied with your life. I think that it was one-sided love. Which brings us to the second thing – her self esteem. The girl did not love herself in the past. She was never satisfied with her and her life and unfortunately such things make us lose the people in our lives.

There is our past self among the ruins. She, the girlish one, the foolish one, the one who longs for a place with us here, where she is not welcome.

Love Looks Pretty on You, Lang Leav

In this book the author emphasizes the new beginning, our rebirth. We need to understand that we are only human beings and that all of us make mistakes. It is natural thing to make mistakes. We have to accept them and learn from them. Throughout the book, I realized that the girl was really attached to her parent. Seeing her Father abusing her Mother was the source of her anger, she wanted revenge. I love the mentioned girl with all of my heart because despite everything, she remained a good person. She knows how to love and she learns from her loss and her past. She is everything that we all want to be.

Your Right to Love
It is your right to define love on your own terms. Love between two consenting adults is never wrong, no matter how much anyone tries to convince you it is.
Be with the person who makes you happy. Who makes your heart sing.
It is your right to endlessly curate your life. Let her be herself. Or she will be somebody’s else’s.

Love Looks Pretty on You; Lang Leav〛

Anxiety
I struggle with things that are as easy to others as breathing.
Like breathing. Like answering the phone. Or sending that email I have been meaning to for weeks.
I panic when I am asked out to dinner, even if it’s with someone I really want to see.
It’s hard for me to commit to anything, and when I do, I overthink it until my brain tells me I have made a mistake, like a rat caught in a maze, trying to claw its way out.
I don’t know why I am like this. People ask me why I can’t do anything without jumping through a thousand thoughts, like hoops. But sometimes I wonder if my inability to function in the real world is really such a bad thing. I wonder if that’s why I’ve spent so much time sheltered in my imagination.
And because I can’t live in the real world, I create worlds to belong to. And I wonder if the very thing I’ve always been told is my weakness, has all along, been my strength.

Love Looks Pretty on You; Lang Leav〛

To conclude everything, I really enjoyed reading this poetry collection and I would like to read more of the author Lang Leav.

Wedding Vibes Everywhere!

Happy December, friends!
This is my first post in this month and this time I will not be complaining about not posting earlier because guess what I’m getting married! And I think this is a good reason for not writing quite often. Yes, I’m beyond excited about everything and I had like a billion things to do, but somehow I managed to remain calm. My wedding preps are almost done, every single detail is planned and all I have to do now is to stay calm and wait for my wedding day. The wedding will take place in one of the hotels in my city, on December 21st. I know it’s like two weeks from now and even though I look calm outside, I swear I’m screaming inside. I have everything – my wedding dress, my bridesmaids, and decoration. Everything’s here and I hope I will have control over these things. Huh, now putting these thoughts into words gave that strong feeling of anxiety. I guess it’s normal thing. Anyway, I’m really happy and I can’t wait to get married.

On the other hand, previous two months were quite hectic for me and I didn’t manage to read anything. I really had so many things to do and I mentioned all of them in my previous posts. I was so busy and I missed reading so much. I hope I will read at least one or two books before the year ends. I think I will go for some light read, maybe some good holiday book. Unfortunately, I really have no idea what to read and your book suggetstions are very welcome at the moment. I want to read something romantic, snowy, and christmasy. Speaking of the holiday romance, have you guys seen the movie Let It Snow? I remeber four years ago I read this book by Maureen Johnson, John Green, and Lauren Myracle and I really loved it. I was so happy when I heard that they are making the movie based on this book and I even downloaded it. I just couldn’t find the time to see it.
For those of you who have seen the movie, what do you think about it?

I kind of realized that the last two months are all about my personal things and it’s less book oriented, but it’s because we get busy sometimes and we barely have the time for anything. I didn’t give up on reading and I will never do that. Reading has a really special place in my heart and it’s something that makes me happy. I hope you understand me now.

Have a great weekend,
